  • How does oil affect a refrigeration system?
  • Oil has a very low vapor pressure and will attract the refrigerant in both the vapor and liquid states. Refrigerant migration can cause the compressor’s crankcase to lose its oil, thus circulating the oil throughout the refrigeration system.
  • What happens if a refrigeration evaporator is oil logged?
  • The low side of a refrigeration system can also become restricted due to an oil-logged evaporator. Ideally, oil in a refrigeration or air conditioning system should stay inside the compressor’s crankcase to lubricate the compressor’s moving parts.
  • What causes a refrigerator oil control to trip?
  • Short cycling, caused by many conditions — low head pressures, low refrigerant charge, improper differential setting of the low-pressure control, or leaking of the liquid solenoid valve – can cause the oil control to trip. Today’s refrigeration mechanic must be knowledgeable and not afraid to ask questions.
  • Why is oil important in a refrigeration system?
  • Oil minimizes mechanical wear by reducing friction. Oil also maintains a seal between the high and low side of the compressor. Without proper lubrication, the compressor’s valves, mating scrolls, screws, and vanes would not properly seal. The results would be high-side refrigerant pressures entering the low side of the refrigeration system.
  • What vapor pressure does refrigeration oil have?
  • Some refrigeration oils have a vapor pressure as low as 5-10 microns. If the oil did not have a very low vapor pressure, it would vaporize every time a low pressure existed in the crankcase or when a vacuum was pulled on the crankcase. Because refrigeration migration can occur with refrigerant vapor, the migration can occur uphill or downhill.
  • What happens if refrigeration oil is cold?
  • When refrigeration oil is cold, it becomes very thick and viscous, making it difficult to move the oil through the special pressure sensing mechanism of electronic oil controls. The crankcase heaters also help prevent refrigerant migration. Migration occurs on cold nights because of pressure differences.
