Cameroon, West Africa's Latest Oil Battleground
Cameroon became a modest oil exporter in 1977, with production peaking at 185,000 bpd in 1985. Since then, it declined steadily to about 55,000 bpd in 2010/11 due to maturing fields.
In April 2025, Venezuela's crude oil production averaged 830,000 barrels per day (b/d), down from 1.2 million b/d at the beginning of the year, according to EIA’s May 2025 Short-Term Energy Outlook. This average is the lowest level since January 2003, when a nationwide strike and civil unrest largely brought the operations of Venezuela's state oil company, Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A.

Venezuela’s crude oil production declines amid
Crude oil production in Venezuela decreased from 2.3 million barrels per day (b/d) in January 2025 to 1.6 million b/d in January 2018. A combination of relatively low global crude oil prices and the mismanagement of Venezuela’s oil industry has led to these accelerated declines in production.
Venezuela's conventional crude oil is heavy and sour by international standards. As a result, much of Venezuela's oil production must go to specialized and international refineries. The country's most prolific production area is the OOB, which accounted for more than half of Venezuela's oil production in 2017.
How Low Can Venezuelan Oil Production Go? Center
Venezuela’s loss of production volumes was the largest global unplanned fall in crude oil output in 2017, a trend that has continued to intensify into 2025 and has the potential to get significantly worse in the coming months. According to the latest data, Venezuela’s crude oil production now stands at its lowest level in more than 50 years.
(Business in Cameroon) Société nationale des hydrocarbures (SNH) informs that Cameroon has sold 16.86 million barrels of crude oil in 2017, against 20.51 million in 2016.Between the two periods, this represents a decrease by 3.65 million barrels. According to SNH, the decline observed is due to a fall in production.
Perenco Oil and Gas company in Cameroon Perenco
Perenco is now the largest operator in Cameroon, with an operating area in the Rio del Rey and Douala basins, with oil and gas production of 85,000 BOEPD (51,000 barrels per day and 24 million m3 of gas per day).
Venezuela’s crude oil production has been on a downward trend for two decades, but it has experienced significant decreases over the past two years. Crude oil production in Venezuela decreased

- Will Chevron be able to produce crude oil in Venezuela?
- Much of Venezuela's crude oil production capacity and infrastructure have suffered from a decade-long lack of capital and regular maintenance. Chevron's earlier exemption increased its production to 135,000 barrels per day (b/d) in 2023, and we expect Chevron's output in Venezuela to reach 200,000 b/d by the end of 2024.
- What happened to crude oil imports from Venezuela?
- U.S. crude oil imports from Venezuela similarly declined, falling from 1.3 million b/d in 2001 to about 510,000 b/d in 2018. Imports halted in 2019 for four years before resuming under limited sanctions relief in January 2023 and increasing to 153,000 b/d in July 2023.
- How much oil will Venezuela produce in 2024?
- Ventures operated by ENI, Repsol, and Maurel & Prom could increase production by an additional 50,000 b/d in the near term, according to IPD Latin America. As a result, we asses that these ventures could raise Venezuela’s total output to about 900,000 b/d by the end of 2024. Further increases in Venezuela’s crude oil production will take longer.

In the meantime, Cameroon continues to concentrate on upstream and downstream activities. Downstream, the country plans to refurbish the national oil refinery, SONARA, following a devastating fire of an unknown cause in June 2019.
