Abstract: The production of biodiesel from crude palm oil (CPO) using microwave technique is investigated and has been compared with conventional heating. Two-step biodiesel production process is applied to maximize the highest biodiesel yield in short reaction time using microwave method.
Production of crude palm oil through
The present study investigated a combined process of pretreatment using microwave and solvent extraction to mill crude palm oil, with no introduction of water or steam. High oil yield was obtained from fresh palm fruits through microwave pretreatment in a 42 L, 1000 W and 2450 MHz microwave oven; and followed by hexane extraction.
Abstract The present study shows that microwave pretreatment coupled with solvent extraction is a clean and dry process for the production of crude palm oil (CPO). The results indicate that palm fruits microwave heated for 3 min achieved oil yield comparable to the conventional and commercial palm oil milling process with an average of 20%.

Advances in Food Process Engineering
The reduction of drying times in microwave assisted drying is beneficial for color, porosity, aroma, shrinkage, and rehydration. Microwaveassisted freeze drying is another recently developed hybrid technique for various food products. The use of microwave freeze drying results in much faster drying rates with very high product quality.
We are a leading supplier and technology provider of jute mill machinery in Bangladesh and abroad with direct support of Golden Eagle Mackie (UK) Limited. There is a current trend within the Jute Industries of India and Bangladesh to increase the number of drawing passages when preparing the jute sliver for sacking.
- Is microwave pretreatment a clean and dry process for palm oil production?
- The present study shows that microwave pretreatment coupled with solvent extraction is a clean and dry process for the production of crude palm oil (CPO). The results indicate that palm fruits microwave heated for 3 min achieved oil yield comparable to the conventional and commercial palm oil milling process with an average of 20%.
- Does palm oil milling process produce water effluent?
- The current combinatory of microwave treatment and solvent extraction has fully omitted the clarification step as in the conventional palm oil milling process. This is a clean and dry process that does not produce water effluent. 4. Conclusion
- Can palm fruits be microwaved for 3 min?
- The results indicate that palm fruits microwave heated for 3 min achieved oil yield comparable to the conventional and commercial palm oil milling process with an average of 20%. Fatty acid composition (FAC) of the CPO produced shows an increment in lauric acid (C12:0) as the duration of microwave exposure increases.
- Is microwave treatment a good option for phytonutrient recovery?
- The current pretreatment using microwave could also offer as an alternative route for phytonutrients recovery. The current combinatory of microwave treatment and solvent extraction has fully omitted the clarification step as in the conventional palm oil milling process. This is a clean and dry process that does not produce water effluent. 4.
- Does microwave exposure affect mesocarp?
- It was observed that microwave exposure has greater effect on the kernel than mesocarp. There was almost negligible drying and browning effect upon 1 min exposure. Although kernels started to turn brown and appeared drier after 2 min exposure, the mesocarp undergoes negligible browning.
