Optimization of Biodiesel Production from African Crude
One important chemical property to be quantified in crude oil palm (CPO) is the free fatty acid (FFAs) con-tents, as this property may aid in determining the type of process to be followed for obtaining biodiesel. The ba-sic catalysis is not recommended in the case of oils with a high free fatty acid concentration (>0.5%), due to the
Abstract. Carbohydrate fatty acid esters have a broad spectrum of applications in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. The enzyme-catalyzed acylation is significantly more selective than the chemical process and is carried out at milder conditions.
Optimization of Biodiesel Production from African
In this study, African crude palm olein (CPO) was used to synthesize biodiesel. The objective was to determine the optimal reaction conditions for the methanolysis of olein. The used CPO had a 5.72% concentration of free fatty acids (FFA); thus, the production of biodiesel was carried out in two stages: 1) esterification using sulfuric acid and 2) transesterification using sodium methoxide.
A narrow carbon number distribution leads to sharp solid–liquid phase transitions similar to that of the fatty acid methyl ester mixture of Even better opportunities exist on the international market where Australia’s fats and Malaysia’s palm oil often reach
- Can fatty acid methyl ester be synthesized for high- and low-acid-content oil?
- The synthesized catalyst was feasible for high- and low-acid-content oil. The properties of both products confirmed the standard requirements. The synthesis of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) from the high- and low-acid-content feedstock of crude palm oil (CPO) and karanj oil (KO) was conducted over CaO–La 2 O 3 –Al 2 O 3 mixed-oxide catalyst.
- Can palm oil be used as a substrate for fatty acid methyl ester production?
- Abstract Oil from palm oil mill effluents (POME) was utilized as the substrate for fatty-acid methyl ester (FAME) production using lipase from palm fruit immobilized to chitosan beads as a catalyst...
- What is fatty acid methyl esters (FAME)?
- Fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) were produced from palm oil using eggshell modified with magnesium and potassium nitrates to form a composite, low-cost heterogeneous catalyst for transesterification. The catalyst, prepared by the combination of impregnation/co-precipitation was calcined at 830 °C for 4 h.
- How does fatty acid methyl ester synthesis occur in a microchannel reactor?
- This work studied the flow pattern and reaction kinetics for fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) synthesis through transesterification of palm oil with methanol in a microchannel reactor. It was observed in the experiments using a high-speed camera that the flow pattern evolved along the microchannels due to the coalescence of adjacent droplets.
- Where is fatty acid methyl esters produced?
- 1 School of Chemical Engineering, Engineering Campus, Universiti Sains Malaysia, 14300 Nibong Tebal, Penang, Malaysia. Fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) were produced from palm oil using eggshell modified with magnesium and potassium nitrates to form a composite, low-cost heterogeneous catalyst for transesterification.
- Does catalyst concentration affect kinetics of palm oil transesterification with methanol?
- The influences of catalyst concentration, reaction temperature, and reactant molar ratio on the flow pattern were systematically investigated. It was the first successful attempt to determine the kinetics data for the transesterification of palm oil with methanol in the first 120 s, owing to the use of microchannel reactors.
