Abstract: This paper deals with the indigenous tree peony (Paeonia sect. Moutan) species used for landscape and edible seed oil, propagation and silviculture techniques. The plants of Paeonia ostii var. lishizhenii and P. rockii have strong drought resistance with the key genes, DREB2A, WRKY and XET, while P. ostii var. lishizhenii is wider adaptability and distribution.
Herbaceous peony has been widely cultivated in due to its substantial ornamental and medicinal value. In the present study, the phenotypic characteristics, total fatty acid (FA) content, and nine FA compositions of herbaceous peony seeds from 14 populations belonging to six species and one subspecies were determined by normal test and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS).

Fatty acid analysis in the seeds of 50 Paeonia ostii
Tree peony seeds are rich in α-linolenic acid (ALA), and the peony seed oil is now being produced in China. Paeonia ostii is the most widely used tree peony species for oil extraction, which is commercially called Fengdan and treated as a single cultivar. Here, 50 P. ostii individuals from the same population in northern were randomly selected for fatty acids (FAs) analysis.
Abstract. The influence of the foliage boron(B)-spaying concentration on the yield and fatty acid composition of tree peony (Paeonia ostii ‘Feng Dan’) was explored in the experiment of 2014-2015.In this research, a statistically significant correlation was found between the mass concentration of foliage boron- spraying and tree peony seed yield.
Fatty acid profile in the seeds and seed tissues
Most common plant oils have little α-linolenic acid (C18:3(Δ9,12,15), ALA) and an unhealthy ω6/ω3 ratio. Here, fatty acids (FAs) in the seeds of 11 species of Paeonia L., including 10 tree peony and one herbaceous species, were explored using gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer.
Section Moutan comprises eight species, which are native and endemic to (Hong 2010). Seed oil can be extracted from peony seeds, which contain fatty acid compositions, making them crucial woody oil crops at present (Zhang et al. 2015). Paeonia seeds are big and mostly dispersed by gravity; thus, the transmission distance is very short.

The composition of fatty acid was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and the main components of the fatty acid composition were quantified by internal standard method. The increase in the oil extraction rate after foliage boron-spraying nutrition of different concentration was significant and ranged between 0.04% and 11.43%.
α-linolenic acid (ALA) deficiency and a skewed ω6: ω3 fatty acid ratio in the diet are thought to be a major cause for the high incidence of cardiovascular, inflammatory, and autoimmune diseases.Recent years, tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa Andr.) with the high proportion of ALA (more than 45% in seed oil) is widely concerned. However, the underlying accumulation mechanism of the ALA in
- Does peony seed oil contain polyunsaturated fatty acids?
- Analyses of fatty acid composition in peony seed oil by GC–MS showed that the relative contents of polyunsaturated fatty acids and α -linolenic acid were higher during the period from 95 to 105 DAP, exceeding 90% and 33% of total fatty acids, respectively, and the ratios of ω -6: ω -3 varied from 0.87:1 to 1.66:1.
- Do tree peony seeds have different oil content?
- Liu et al. reported that the oil, kernel, and shell contents of tree peony seeds were not different in different geographical regions [ 21 ]. The oil content of peony seeds is under genetic control and determines cultivar characteristics, Han et al. found that oil contents varied significantly between tree peony species [ 12 ].
- What fatty acids are in tree peony oil?
- Tree peony oil is characterized by high levels of unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs; > 90%), including alpha linolenic acid (ALA; > 40%), linoleic acid (LA), and oleic acid (OA) 3, 4.
- Does paternal inheritance affect peony seed oil?
- Previous studies of peony seed oil have mainly focused on the types and contents of FAs in tree peonies, including wild species and cultivated varieties of a variety of provenances; other studies have investigated the influence of paternal inheritance on FA content 3, 4, 6, 7, 8.
- How to obtain maximum oil yield from peony seeds?
- Optimized ultrasound-assisted extraction conditions (solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:7, ultrasonication time of 66 min, ultrasonication temperature of 55 °C and ultrasonication power of 395 W) were obtained by using response surface methodology to obtain the maximum oil yield from peony ( Paeonia suffruticosa Andr.) seeds.
- Is ethanol a good extractant for oil from peony seeds?
- It was concluded that optimization of UAE of oil from peony seeds was successfully performed. Ethanol was evaluated as the optimum extractant with healthy and eco-friendly characteristics as well as high oil yield.
